Comments: I sit here this evening listening to your album Diamonds in the Rough and decided to do a search and have landed here.

I bought my father your very first album when I was a youngster. The last song on one of the sides is Dark as a Dungeon.

That song means so much to me when I hear it now. My Dad spoke to me about the coal mines in Inverness and New Waterford.

I likely would have ended up a coal miner if there was one around when I became of age.

My Dad passed 1 month before his 65th birthday of Black Lung and Rita MacNeils song hits me in the soft spot.

I can not say thank you enough for your songs and beautiful performances.

It keeps the memories of all the sons and Dads that have been down in the coal mines and the respect that they all deserve.

We plan on being back in Cape Breton next summer and hope to catch you at the Celtic Colors. When we were in the Eastern Provinces, we totally fell in love with the area and the people. Never in all our lives have we met such friendly, down to earth people. It could become a way of life for us. Summer in CB and winter in Ont. Keep going with your beautiful, meaningful music. Comments: Cocluding our conference with the Men of the Deeps marching in to the darkened ballroom with their hard hat head lamps on....AMAZING....it seems there was not a dry eye in the house. I was so moved as my Grandfather was killed in a mining accident in nearby New Waterford in the 50's. My Nan was left a widow with ten kids to look after. She died last year at age 92 and I so miss visiting her when I go to Cape Breton. This mining choir tribute was as moving for me as the funeral last year. The final selection "We rise again" with nearly all 200 people together standing in a long ribbon waving their hands held high was incredibly moving. Certainly very uplifting....a force of so many. Everyone I greeted was so pleased with our sponsorship. Thank you Men of the Deeps.

I loved your concert...though I must say it left me in a melancholy and pensive frame of mind. The whole notion of a tragedy of that magnitude in a small community where such an event affects every family...I feel great sorrow and also admiration and respect for those who make their lives, and raise their families in this treacherous setting and situation. I had forgotten about the Springhill disaster of 1958...I wasn't born yet, and neither was a high school friend of mine, whose father perished in the mine while my friend's mother was expecting the new baby who would become his late father's namesake the following year. I thank you for bringing my attention to the memory of those men, and sharing your way of life as well as the history you so vividly depicted. You sing from the heart about what is real, and it comes across in the most beautiful!
way...tears of sorrow and admiration still come to me as I listen to your songs over again. The soloists gave me goosebumps, in both the power and sincerity of their expression as they told stories in song, and the poem also. My husband and I and our 2 teenage children had the honor of attending your June 30th concert at the Miner's Museum in Glace Bay. We were on a week long vacation traveling in and around Cape Breton. Even through the rain and fog, we recognized the profound beauty surrounding us! But certainly the greatest highlight of it all was to hear your music! The day before, we had gone on a whale watch and were fortunate to see at least a dozen fin whales. As thrilling as that was, I want you to know that the site of a thousand whales could not have moved us more than the sound of your voices! That you keep the coal miner culture alive for so many to learn about is significant. Though my family has no direct connection to the trade matters not. What does matter is that we remember to pay homage to every worker who has ever put their life on the line on behalf of someone else. On the high seas? On a steel frame many stories high? Working on road construction or high tensi!
on wires? Your songs touch the heart of anyone who has ever had such an association with dangerous conditions. In particular, I want to thank you for your last song - "You Raise Me Up". It gives honor to the One who protects us all. Bless you! Cindy

Comments: My daughter belongs to Young Singers and sang with the Men of the Deeps in Glace Bay in July of 2007. It was the most moving experience that I have ever been a part of and I know it is an experience that Stephanie will never forget. I thank you for that.

I would also like to share that we had a male member of our choir that was very quiet and nervous when he was up on stage. When one of the miners put their helmet on his head while singing "Rise Again", I thought he was going to burst with pride.

Keep up the great work, you truly are an amazing group of men.

Comments: My Great Grandfather was Thius Tutty. Until he died in 1976 (buried in Cape Breton) he may have been the last living pick axe coal miner of his generation. He lost the sight of one eye while employed in the Glace Bay coal mines.

For Dad, Doug Henwood who made it out of the mine in '58. And in memory of Victor Henwood (died in the mine '56 Explosion), Harlan Henwood (died in the '58 bump) and James Noiles (survived the '58 bump, died Oct. 18, '07)-thank you to the bareface miners & draegermen who brought Jim out and allowed him to be here to raise his two sons.

A total of 424 men and boys lost their lives in the Springhill Mines from the beginning of the coal operations until the final closure in 1971.
